What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive skin resurfacing treatment aimed at treating signs of aging and improving the appearance of your face. At our office, we use the SkinPen® to perform our microneedling procedures. This procedure is also known as collagen induction therapy, as it works by creating mini injuries to the targeted areas to encourage the skin’s natural healing process.

Over time, our bodies lose the ability to create collagen and elastin, the two components that help keep our skin firm, smooth, and supple. In the microneedling process, the micro-injuries created by the SkinPen® help to activate and release growth factors that lead to the rebuilding of collagen and elastin in the skin.

Microneedling is great for skin rejuvenation on the face, hands & body including those with issues such as:

  • Fine lines
  • Skin discolorations
  • Blemishes
  • Acne scars
  • Large pores
  • Melasma

Benefits of Microneedling

There are many benefits to having the microneedle procedure for skin rejuvenation. Because of the advanced medical-grade technology of the SkinPen®, you’ll be able to experience the beautiful results of a healthy, younger-looking appearance.

The benefits include:

  • Appropriate for use on all skin types
  • Minimal damage to the epidermis
  • A comfortable procedure with the use of topical anesthetics
  • Short procedure time between 30 minutes to one hour
  • Can be used on many body parts
  • Minimal risk of side-effects or scarring

Most any healthy adult can be a candidate for the microneedling procedure. Because of its low-risk profile, this procedure is a viable option for those who are not candidates for laser resurfacing for skin rejuvenation.

Most people experience little downtime after the microneedling procedure is complete. Mild swelling and redness may occur after the procedure, and while healing times may vary from individual to individual, most can expect to see results within two to four days but results may take up to six months as the collagen in your skin continues to rebuild and help revitalize your skin.

Microneedle with PRP (Platelet-Rich-Plasma) or Peptides

Microneedling with PRP is also commonly known as the “Vampire Facial”. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a highly concentrated autologous serum that is rich in growth factors and cytokines. These growth factors regulate and induce cell migration, attachment proliferation, and differentiation as well as promote extracellular matrix accumulation. The preparation of PRP begins with whole blood obtained peripherally from the patient by venipuncture. The blood sample is placed into the centrifuge where it is separated and PRP is obtained. The PRP is then used with microneedling. PRP promotes the regeneration process of soft tissue further stimulating the natural healing process and creation of collagen. PRP is also used to stimulate hair growth for those who suffer from unwanted hair loss.
