Differences in PRP & PRF

Although there are some basic similarities between platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), there are some crucial differences that make PRF superior for hair restoration.

Both procedures require a blood draw, although PRF requires a lesser amount. The blood is then spun at a higher speed in the centrifuge, which causes the heavier cells in the blood, the stem cells and white blood cells to collect in the bottom part of the test tube, while the platelets and plasma collect in the upper part. The platelets and plasma are collected and injected into the areas of thinning hair.

Research is showing that even higher concentrations of platelets, as well as a concentration of white blood cells and stem cells is a more effective mix. That’s what PRF delivers. To create PRF the blood is spun at a lower speed so that the layers of the blood do not separate out as distinctly. This allows some of the white blood cells and stem cells to remain within the platelet layer, instead of being separated. This gives PRF more healing factors than PRP.

Another difference is the final concentration of platelets in PRP and PRF. PRP ends with 2 to 5 times the level of platelets found in normal blood. Higher concentrations are more effective, and PRF contains approximately 10 times the platelet concentration when compared with normal blood.

PRF does not contain any additives, whereas an anticoagulant is used during the processing of the blood when making PRP. Without the anticoagulant, PRF takes the natural fibrinogen within our blood and it is converted to fibrin by thrombin in the early stages of clot formation. This creates a spongy fibrin matrix that activates the platelets that acts as a scaffolding to keep the growth factors and stem cells in the area they are injected or micro-needled in to the area, keeping them from diffusing, which can happen with PRP.

How Long Does PRF/ PRP Treatment Take?

PRF treatments take around 30 minutes. Patients typically require several sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, with maintenance atreatment recommended thereafter around once a year. The procedure is performed with a medical grade microneedling device. The microneedle is used to push the platelets in to the scalp. A numbing cream can be applied prior to treatment to minimize discomfort.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Everyone is a candidate for the scalp treatments.  Our scalps actually age 7 times faster than our face.  So a healthy scalp helps with all thinning and hair loss.

A consult is required for the PRF microneedle treatments so establish where new growth is possible.  Good candidates for PRF hair restoration therapy must have some hair growth in and/or around the treatment zone.

During your initial consultation, tell the practitioner of any medications you’re taking. Some conditions, such as platelet dysfunction syndromes or hemodynamic instability prohibit effective PRF treatments. Patients with certain histories or those using blood thinners may have disqualifying factors.

Is There Any Downtime?

Because the treatment is natural, there’s little chance of an adverse reaction. While the treatment area may be tender, swollen, or reddened immediately following your session, it shouldn’t prohibit normal activities. It’s wise to avoid exercise for a few days to allow the area to heal, but there is virtually no downtime.

How Quickly Will I See Results?

The first notable result is a reduction in shedding, followed by improvement in hair texture and thickness within two weeks of the initial appointment. However, the full scale of hair regrowth and thickening aren’t typically measurable until approximately 3-6 months into the treatment.
